Brother TZe Tape Compatibility Chart
Brother's TZe tape system is the backbone of their P-touch label printer range. With dozens of tape widths, colours and specialty types available, it can be tricky to know which tapes work with your printer. This guide breaks it all down so you can order with confidence.
What Are TZe Tapes?
TZe (pronounced "tee-zee-ee") tapes are Brother's standard laminated label cassettes. They replaced the older TZ format, though TZe tapes are fully backward-compatible with printers that accepted TZ cassettes. Each cassette contains a continuous roll of label tape, typically 8 metres long, with a built-in ink ribbon for thermal transfer printing.
The laminated construction is what sets TZe tapes apart. The printed text is sandwiched beneath a clear protective layer, making the labels resistant to water, chemicals, abrasion, UV exposure and temperature extremes. This is why Brother labels are the go-to choice for industrial, electrical and outdoor applications across Australia.
TZe Tape Widths
TZe tapes are available in six standard widths. The maximum width your printer can accept depends on the model. See the compatibility chart below.
| Tape Width | Common Uses |
|---|---|
| 6 mm | Cable flags, small component labels, file tab labels |
| 9 mm | Cable wraps, small shelf labels, name badges |
| 12 mm | General-purpose labelling, folders, storage bins |
| 18 mm | Electrical panels, safety signs, equipment labels |
| 24 mm | Large signage, pipe markers, hazard labels |
| 36 mm | Wide-format signage, shelving labels, warehouse markers |
The 12 mm width is by far the most popular for everyday office labelling, while 18 mm and 24 mm tapes are commonly used in trades and industrial settings.
TZe Tape Types
Standard Laminated (TZe)
The workhorse of the range. Standard laminated tapes feature a matte or gloss finish with the printed text protected under a clear laminate layer. Available in a huge variety of text and background colour combinations, with black on white (TZe-231, TZe-251, etc.) being the most widely used. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
Extra Strength Adhesive (TZe-S)
These tapes use a stronger adhesive formulation designed for rough, textured or curved surfaces. Use TZe-S tapes when labelling corrugated cardboard, powder-coated metal, brick or other surfaces where standard tapes may lift at the edges.
Flexible ID (TZe-FX)
Flexible ID tapes are engineered to wrap around cables, pipes, conduits and other cylindrical objects without lifting or flagging. They are a staple for electricians, data technicians and anyone working with cable management. Available in 6 mm, 9 mm, 12 mm, 18 mm and 24 mm widths.
Heat Shrink Tubing (HSe)
While technically not a TZe tape, Brother's HSe heat shrink tubing cassettes use the same printer platform. Print your text, slide the tube over a cable and apply heat with a heat gun for a permanent, professional cable identification solution. Available in various diameters and colours.
Specialty Tapes
Brother also offers several specialty TZe tapes for specific applications:
- TZe-MQ (matt finish): ideal for craft projects and decorative labelling
- TZe-PR (premium metallic): gold and silver finishes for premium labelling
- Security tape (TZe-SE): leaves a tamper-evident pattern when removed
- Fabric iron-on (TZe-FA): for labelling uniforms, school clothing and fabric items
- Acid-free (TZe-AF): suitable for archival and museum applications
Colour Options
TZe tapes come in a wide range of colour combinations. The most common options include:
| Text Colour | Tape Colour | Example Part Number (12 mm) |
|---|---|---|
| Black | White | TZe-231 |
| Black | Clear | TZe-131 |
| Black | Yellow | TZe-631 |
| Black | Green | TZe-731 |
| Black | Blue | TZe-531 |
| Black | Red | TZe-431 |
| White | Black | TZe-335 |
| Red | White | TZe-232 |
| Blue | White | TZe-233 |
Coloured tapes are particularly useful for colour-coded filing systems, safety signage (yellow for caution, red for danger), and warehouse zone identification.

Tips for Choosing the Right TZe Tape
- Match the width to your application. Use 6-9 mm for cables and small items, 12 mm for general labels, and 18-36 mm for signage and panels.
- Consider the surface. Rough or curved surfaces call for extra strength (TZe-S) or flexible ID (TZe-FX) tapes.
- Use colour strategically. Yellow for warnings, red for danger, green for safety. Align with Australian safety standards (AS 1319) where required.
- Buy multi-packs to save. Brother offers value multi-packs for popular colours and widths. Check our Brother tapes range for current pricing inc. GST.
- Store tapes correctly. Keep unused TZe cassettes in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maximise shelf life.
